Caring Canine Companions is a dedicated group of dog owners with pet therapy canines. Caring Canine Companions make weekly visits group homes and/or nursing homes. The visits allows residents to pet the dogs which brighten up their day and has been shown to have health benefits (e.g. as lowering blood pressure). The Los Alamos Senior Center offers the following services to citizens of Los Alamos County who are 50 years of age or older:
Help with getting dentures: This is available to persons who are low income and living in Section 8 housing.
Medicare Problems: HIBAC offers assistance with medicare problems.
Flu Shots: The Betty Ehart Senior Center offers flu shots to seniors at high risk each fall. Please bring proof of insurance and a photo ID.
Congregate Meals: Serviced Monday - Friday at 12:00pm at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. Meal menus are published every Thursday in the Monitor. Reservations are requested. The suggested donation for age 60 and over is $4.00. Younger members and guests are charged $7.50. Please call 662-8922 to make a reservation. All home delivered meals should also be made to this number.
Day Out and Homemaker Service: Homemaker duties provide light housekeeping, running errands or grocery shopping. Day Out services provide a place for seniors who are lonely or homebound due to physical problems to meet some new friends under a variety of supervised activities in a cheerful safe surrounding. This program accommodates the working care giver. This program is available Monday - Thursday, 8:00 am to 4:00pm. Please call 661-0081 for more information.
Transportation: This service is provided for Los Alamos County residents over 55 years of age and handicapped adults on a space available basis. This service includes transportation for medical appointments, shopping, RSVP volunteers (retired and senior volunteers), and other needs of members to attend Senior Center activities. The vehicles operate from 8:00am to 4:30pm daily. For more information, please call 662-8922. Fares are $3.00 for each on-way trip in Los Alamos County. Reservations 24 hours in advance are requested.Requests for emergency and medical transportation are referred to H.E.L.P., a volunteer transportation service provided by the Lions Club.
Case Management: Focuses on seniors of the most economic and social needs, as well as the frail elderly in coordination of in-home services in order to delay institutionalization. In addition, the Senior Center also works with the Los Alamos Visiting Nurses, Los Alamos Family Council, mental health counselors, the local nursing home director, and the Los Alamos Medical Center social worker and discharge planner to secure services.
Services for Low Income Seniors: Community donations provide transportation and home delivery meals, without charge to seniors who are in financial need. Seniors are sometimes referred for low income assistance including housing assistance, SSI, food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, and Qualified Medicare Beneficiaries. Seniors in need of financial assistance with rent or utilities are referred to H.E.L.P. Agency in Espanola.
Independent Living Support Services: Helps seniors to live independently, including chore referrals, reassurance phone calls, employment referrals. In addition, transportation and meals are also offered.
Tax returns: AARP can help seniors with simple tax forms.
